Ghana Integrity Initiative
Focus
Focus on empowering communities in the Ga-East Municipality to demand transparency, responsiveness and accountability in the provision of water and in the management of water systems.

Approach
Build the capacity of GII staff to use participatory methodologies to engage selected communities to achieve project goals

3 communities located in deprived areas in the Ga-East Municipality, in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana namely: Adenkrebi, Kweiman and  Otinibi

The communities are grouped into 2:
Most Deprived: Adenkrebi. Community only source of drinking water is a stream (Dakubi) which flows through polluted areas.

Less Deprived: Kweiman and Otinibi. They have few boreholes but woefully inadequate due to the rising population.

The water problem has resulted in:

  •  Absenteeism from school, poverty due to low economic activities, majority of indigenes/settlers in these areas are farmers who depend on water for their livelihood.
  •
  •  Revenue collection is low
  •
  •   Alleged incidence of corruption reported during orientation programmes
  •
  •  No expansion in water systems
  •  etc

Structure
Each group has an M&E Team and a Focal Person who serves as the liaison between GII, and the community.

All these representatives were democratically selected by the people.

Quarterly community meetings are organised to share progress, experiences, lessons learnt and the way forward in achieving the project goal to ensure total community involvement.
